Returning to camp 4

May 23, 2007 By blogadmin 19 Comments

Paul is on his way back to camp 4. Hi Nick here with an update.

Communication has been very difficult this morning with Paul, and even for Fi at base camp, however we do know that Attila was with him and also summited.

Forecast conditions were clear, no cloud, but a 30-50kph wind from the west, which with wind chill would have dropped the forecast -18C air temperature to something like an effective -46C.

The forecast is for these conditions to continue, with the wind strengthening over the next few days.

Despite the probably clear view, the cold would have meant that Paul and Attila wouldn’t have been waiting around for long on top and will now be on their way back to camp 4. We’re looking forward to hearing of his safe arrival in a few more hours. Some phone interviews are planned and I’ll post recordings of these to the site.

Thank you for all the messages for Paul and Fi, I’ll bundle these into a single file in another hour or so and send it to him so it’s ready to be downloaded when he reaches camp 4. Fi will also download them at base camp.

Hi Paul .A truly great achievement which was made possible by your meticulous planning and preparation plus a great deal of guts and detimination. In addition you were ably supported by your darling wife Fiona. You and Fiona would be one of the few couples who have both reached the summit. We look forward to seeing you both safely back home.Beast wishes from your proud Grandfather, Ron Munro

Congratulations Paul, what a superb effort! Congrats also to Fiona and all the crew (especially Nick).

I have followed your journey over the past weeks with great interest back here in Melbourne. Wishing you a safe trip back to Base Camp, Paul. Then its all easy street.

Inspired by your adventure I am now planning my own. But I will stick to visiting Gokyo Lakes and Base Camp.

    Regards, Heidi (Melbourne)

Bet those huge warm mittens Fiona sewed for you are coming in handy now. Continuing to pray for your safety down the mountain.

    Paul,
having listened to you on 774 Melbourne over the past few weeks you have inspired me to make the trek next year to Base camp, I cannot imagine how you must have felt when you reached the top (cold probably 🙂 )!

Listening to you and reading your progress has set me on the road to fitness and adventure!

    Well Done on your Summiting!!!!!!

listened with to you on 774 last thurs night and thought it was a great interview, then went to a school reunion the following night and discovered you were Mary’s son. I’ve been following your progress with interest (and a little anxiety for Mary!!) ever since. I spent quite a long time hiking in Nepal in 1976 and I think it’s time to go back. Good luck with your descent and congratulations on all that you’ve achieved.

    Hey Paul,
Just left a message as a visitor on the site… travelling in UK this week. Wanted to make sure you knew my thoughts are with you. Great effort and safe return mate. Bet your legs are more sore than mine! Everyone had a great run at the Great Ocean Road marathon on Sunday.
Hi Fiona – not long now before he’s “home”. Trust you’re good.

I have just written a message but I don’t think it went so here we go again. Well done Paul. It is fantastic that you have achieved your goal and we, in Sydney are all proud of you. You have trained and worked hard for a long time to achieve what you have and it is great that Fiona can share in this with you when you reach base camp. I have just spoken to Marg and told her I was in the middle of messaging you. Apparently there is a doctor at base camp so I hope all will be okay with your eyes. Well done again and we look forward to seeing all the photos of this adventure whenever they are all collated. Lots of love from Jill, Jan, Robyn, Peter, Michael and Ruth

Paul’s Everest Climb 2007

In 2007, Paul returned to climb Mt Everest after missing out on reaching the summit by 100 metres the previous year. In 2006, Paul and Fiona both climbed together and although Fiona successfully summited, problems with Paul's oxygen system forced him to turn around. On 23 May 2007, exactly a year to the day later, he reached the summit. This is the daily blog from this climb.
