Relaxing in Pheriche

Hi its Paul here.

Today was spent relaxing in Pheriche, while Chris and Bridget left for Namche.

This morning we celebrated Chris’ 31st Birthday at the lodge, before they headed off for the 7 hour hike to Namche. We are sad to see them go as it’s been great fun having them along for the journey so far and sharing lots of experiences. They are off to India, Europe, New York, Hawaii and then home.

Lodge Life
We spent today relaxing in our lodge, alternating between the sunroom and the dining room. Both Fiona and I got through a book each. Our room was typical of most lodges – two beds against opposite walls, with the door opening between. Your bags are placed between the beds, as there is not much room anywhere else.

The dining room is the mainstay of any lodge and this one is heated by a central pot belly stove, so it’s nice and warm compared with the bedrooms. This dining room has windows on 3 sides, with great views of Ama Dablam. Going almost all the way around the dining room is a cushioned bench seat covered by an elaborate tibetan rug. There are many tables in the room and in the evenings its pretty busy with about 30 people.

During the day we tried the sunroom, but it quickly got too hot for us, so most of the day was spent in the dining room.

Yesterday we had a shower, but we say that the shower at base camp is better than the one here. There was no head on the shower, so the water just came out in a single stream like from a hose.

We are just about to order dinner – most likely a vegetarian curry and vegetarian momos (a dumpling served steamed or fried). These are delicious and a real favourite. We don’t eat meat outside of that served by IMG, as we are concerned about getting sick.

Our plan tomorrow is to head back up to Lobuje and then head back to base camp the day after. Hopefully the route through the icefall will be complete by then and we can move up after a day’s rest.

Thanks MC for your song – we loved it.

Thanks for everyone’s concern about my throat. It’s still sore, but is definitely getting better and the infection hasn’t spread to any other parts of my body, which I am very glad about.

We have heard that the icefall doctors were not in the area of the avalanche when it occurred a few days ago. Sorry for not mentioning this earlier.

QECVI students – we will ask about the Sherpa names and about Mingma when we see him in a few days.

Jeff Martin – Will pass on your best wishes to Jack Gerstein – he is a really funny guy to be around and everyone is enjoying his company!

    Paul, great news that your throat is getting better and that the infection has not spread. Hopefully it will go away completely and SOON! Your smile in the above photo speaks volumes…it must have been a very nice “relaxing day”. The dining room of the lodge sounds like the perfect place to read a good book.

    I have been catching up reading your daily e-mails. What an exciting trip for the both of you. Your daily descriptions of your trip bring back alot of memories of my trekking trip to Gokyo. I often tell my wife that we are going to retire in Khumjung so that I can see Ama Dablam every morning when I wake up. It has to be the most beautiful peak in the world.   3. I’ve been away for a few days and when I came back, had to put aside half a day to catch up on the ‘everest news’! I’m a bit nervous about going away this week and for Easter……I’ll need a week when I get back!!   5. Fiona – your Dad plays tennis at our place every Tuesday night and I taught with Marg at AMES BOX HILL and we are just gobsmacked at what you’re doing – admire you both although have never met either of you.
    Good wishes and remember ( as well you know ) that your parents care so much about you and , I feel, will be sooooooo relieved when you’ve DONE it!
