In 2007, Paul returned to climb Mt Everest after missing out on reaching the summit by 100 metres the previous year. On 23 May 2007, exactly a year to the day later, he reached the summit.
After running out of oxygen while high on Everest the previous year, Paul trained hard for another whole year. This year, he had a great support crew with his two brothers who trekked into basecamp with him and then, Fiona left later with a group of 6 including her mother and Paul’s sister, and then stayed with Paul at basecamp for the remainder of his climb.
Like the previous year, Paul did his acclimatisation rotations to camps 1, 2 and 3 and he ended up teaming up with Attila for most of the climb. When the weather looked stable, they set off on their summit bid together. Fiona waited anxiously at basecamp, getting sporadic radio updates throughout Paul’s summit. Thankfully everything went relatively smoothly this time. Here is Paul’s account of his climb to the summit of Mt Everest.
