Hi all,
Paul here at home in Melbourne. I had a look at Google Earth today and was really impressed. So I decided to create an interactive map of Everest that you can fly around and see all the key points on the route I am following up Everest. Having been there, I can tell you that the views are extremely realistic and the level of detail is amazing. For instructions on how to use the map go to this page.
Hopefully this map will be useful when you are trying to follow climbers on Everest and are wondering exactly where they are. With this map, you can just click on the named marker and Google Earth will ‘fly’ you there. The more adventurous might like to try zooming around themselves. See if you can spot the helicopter wreck at base camp.
Cheers, Paul.
Thank you for this info – I have seen so much info on the layouts of various camps, but this puts everest in much better perspective.
I’m rooting for you from here in Canada, Paul, this is your year!

Hello Paul,
We are keen to follow your trip. Is there a way to only receive your posting as email notifications?
I looked for the following but could not find it:-
To manage your email notications, go to the email notications menu link on the

Hi Andrew and Liz,
You need to create and account and login first. (I can see that you have posted this message without being logged in, because instead of your name appearing under the subject it says “Visitor”. Once you have logged in, you will see the “Email notifications” link in the menu under your username on the left hand side of the page.
Hope this helps.
Paul.
PS. It doesn’t send out the full update as an email, it only sends out a small summary with a link that you can click on to view it.
Hi Paul,
I also think it’s a great idea (the google earth map). I didn’t install the thing yet, but I’m willing to do so and I’ll try the same for Kilimanjaro. I just need some time between the job, the classes, the training, the fund raising, the laundry, house cleaning, my boyfriend…. hahahaha!!!! I know you understand what I mean. Besides this subject, I had an idea of what could be interesting for people to see (especially me!). You know in this site, some of the climbers are gonna use PDA technology and satellite phone. I would like to know what it looks like. Is it big, small, do you have a keyboard to write, etc…???? Anyway, I have no clue. Maybe I sound a bit weird not being used to that kind of apparel… Maybe you could just take a picture of the equipment and then I would understand…
OK, Ciao,
Aeronik :o)
Ok, I’ll try and get a shot together of the gear. It’s all pretty small and light weight and there are no moving parts, which is important for higher altitude (even at Everest base camp, hard drives on laptops and ipods can fail due to the low air pressure distorting the case around the drive and causing it to make a terrible sound and then stop working). I’ll do one when I am in Nepal in a bit over a week from now.
Hi Paul,
Just saw an advert for a special report on Channel 9 news this monday on your up and coming adventure. Great to see that you’re getting a lot of support and no doubt there will be a lot more people monitoring this site and hoping for the best. Exciting times no doubt! Good on you for continuing to follow your dream!
Hi Paul,
I have heard about your MyEverest website from my friend, Attila…. He is also climbing Everest this spring, just a few days away from leaving Hungary and flying to Kathmandu and as I have never been in Nepal, nor on high-mountain so I was just wondering what it really takes … From here, Hungary it is almost unimaginable… Feeling a bit worried about him climbing, feeling a bit envious to seeing all those wonderful scenes and trying to climb as high as only one other Hungarian did before.
Reading your posts and looking your Google map I was really fascinated. Seeing all your effort you have done and are going to do…also your strenght of will and endurance, as well as the support of your family and friends – such an amazing thing. It really gave me some idea what it really means being there, where Attila is going to be very soon. Good to know he will be surrounded with as experienced climbers as you – makes me feeling much better:) Wish for all of you a safe journey, and I hope you get to the summit this time! Have a fabulous trip!
All the best
Mira
Hi Paul,
I just loaded the Google Earth Map. It is fantastic! I have a much clearer understanding of the layout of the area and where each camp is realitive to Base Camp and the summit now. Would definitely recommend to others to install it and have a look.
Dame
Paul, thank you for giving us a link to the Google Earth map and marking key points on Everest! This makes following you, TA, and Pat up Everest even more fun!
Hi Mira,
I hear that you are going to be supporting Attilla at base camp – that’s a really good thing to do and I am sure he will appreciate it. We were very lucky to have Mary with us last year. So no doubt we will all get to know one another well over the coming 2 months. Fiona will be at base camp in early May with her intrepid group of trekkers.
You will have a great time on the trek into bc – it really is an amazing experience. There are not many populated places left in the world where you can walk for 2 weeks and not see any machinery.
Paul.
Hi Sandra and Dame – Glad you liked the Google Earth map. Hopefully we might be able to do a little more worth Google Earth too on this trip… Paul.
Hi Paul
Upsz….a small misunderstanding. Would be wonderful to stay there in Hungary:) therefore I am just going to follow his way from home. Somebody needs to be here, and dealing with his PR… I will be with all of you in my heart… Maybe once in my lifetime will have a chance to travell there. But anyway thank you so much for your encouraging words, I am glad this way of the communication works pretty well!:)
Mira
Ahhh. I mustn’t have read one of Attilla’s emails properly enough. Paul.
No prob, that is probably gonna be his girlfriend:)
Would be great to be there, but I have to stay in Hungary – so much to do:)
Mira
I followed yours and Fiona’s journey last year from North Carolina, USA. I wish you the best of luck. You climbed smart last year, so am sure this year will be no different. Stay healthy and safe.
