Climbing Again

May 20, 2007 By blogadmin 20 Comments

Date: 6.15am 21st May 2007

Hi all,

Just a quick note to let you know that Paul has just left camp 2 and is headed for camp 3 this morning. I just spoke with him on the radio and he sounds good and says that conditions are fine today. He has about an hour to walk to the bottom of the Lhotse Face, and then perhaps 3-4 hours of steep climbing up to camp 3. Will let you know when he arrives.

Fiona

Safe at Camp 3
Summits, we leave for C3 tomorrow

I think we are wearing out the ‘Refresh’ button on this computer! That photo of Pauls’s tent is awesome! Certainly no sleep-walking allowed. Mary spoke to your Mum last night, she sounded fabulous and they are coming over for dinner on Thursday night. Also heard from Beck, she is “having a look around”, and also seemed in good spirits, after a meal of green curry. Keep up the good work, and don’t worry about the gardens needing water as we are at last getting plenty. Love John & Mary

    Paul:

Just a quick note to let you know that we are glued to the computer waiting for updates! We hope you have a safe climb to camp 3 today and that the weather window holds. We are so excited for your summit push! You are SO ready for this – go for it!!

Meagan – Way to go! We listened to your audioblog from the summit of Everest today and we were so proud of you. What a great Victoria Day weekend – first the Senators make it to the Stanley Cup final and now you make it to the top of the world!! Go Canada!! We are looking forward to another update when you make it back down the mountain. Climb safely.

    Cheers from Canada,

    Liane

    Hi Paul,
Hope you’re reading this from the warmth and safety of your Camp 3 tent. Get some rest, mate, eat something good and hydrate yourself! The views out your front door must be fantastic. Just no sleepwalking, k? LOL! Good luck with the climb up to the South Col tomorrow morning.
As always, climb safe, climb strong.

    Blessings to you,
    Mark R

    Hi Paul and Fiona,
It’s feels a bit odd being back at my desk looking out over the Children’s Garden at the RBG. No yak bells or lentils (or lost luggage from KTM…). It was a wonderful trip and thankyou to both of you for making it happen. There are quite a few colleagues glued to their computers for updates from Paul even if you can’t see them! Here’s to some benign weather for you very soon and enjoy your climb. Fiona, apple pie from the bakery, mmmm. Love from Liz.

I just check your travelogue and saw that you made it to the top. We always had faith in your drive and spirit. This is awesome to have a good friend succeed in her dream !!

We at the Gallant family are awaiting your safe descent and return home to Ottawa

    Congrats

…is one step nearer. Kia kaha – stay strong, both of you. Here in soaked, lush, green Ngahinapouri, Matilda’s right on the verge of walking. We keep telling her that it’s a race between her and her Uncle Paul as to who achieves their ‘big step’ first. (Bet you didn’t know you were racing a two-foot high Kiwi?!) Blessings, love to both of you from all the Hart mob.

    Hi Paul and Fiona,
Go Paul!….wishing you the best and thinking of you during these next 2-3 days. Stay positive and focussed, we know you’re fit enough. How you going Fiona? Staying healthy I hope (and occupied). Mum came home yesterday and she seems a little weary but relaxed and full of stories of an amazing experience.
Good luck to you both and wishes, Jacqueline x

    Hi Paul and Fiona,

Not sure if we have met? I understand you are both Daylesford residents.
I feel very embarrassed to have just discovered this morning via ABC radio that Paul is in the process of climbing Everest.
As a fellow resident of the Hepburn Shire and a councillor may I wish you all the best for a successful and safe climb to the ‘top of the world’. Fiona, I hope that soon you can relax knowing Paul has made it and is on his way back to base camp.

    warm regards & good luck,
    Cr.Heather Mutimer & family

    Hi Meagan

What an audio blog…5min of non stop talking from the highest point on earth. Sounds to me you could have made it up there without O2 🙂
The audio was even more special as we had the priviledge to meet you at basecamp. Your bubbly and great personality comes across perfectly
I wish you a safe decent and all the best in the future.

    Well done Cas

    Dear Paul and Fiona,

I am glued to my computer as you inch your way closer to the summit. Paul, I hope the good-weather window widens, the oxygen flows freely (but not too freely!), and that you continue to feel fit and strong. May you kick some serious Everest a*se on the 23rd, and enjoy a shared anniversary with Fi.

Fiona, thank you for all your updates too, waiting at basecamp must be challenging and I applaud your positivity and patience. The odd massage must make things a tad easier!

All the best to you both for a safe summit and return, I might catch you back in Melbourne.

    Zoe

PS Thank you both for protecting me from the randy cousins at the Cridget wedding! ;o)

    Hi Cas + 7 wives;)

Seems you bumped into a few other Hungarians guys!:) I have just received a mail on behalf of Attila’s expedition and a nice couple from Hungary, Piroska and István (Steven) told us a story that after they visited Reni at EBC they were trekking back to Lukla. On their way they bumped into Rudi in Tengboche at the Monestry and also they were flying out with the bunch of people where a guy kept joking that he is travelling with his 7 wives – these people must be you!;)

They asked me to say hello, they are sending their warm regards to everybody and congratulations for all your achievements!
(To recognise them you can find Istvan and Piroska’s photo here – they are in red)

Paul’s Everest Climb 2007

In 2007, Paul returned to climb Mt Everest after missing out on reaching the summit by 100 metres the previous year. In 2006, Paul and Fiona both climbed together and although Fiona successfully summited, problems with Paul's oxygen system forced him to turn around. On 23 May 2007, exactly a year to the day later, he reached the summit. This is the daily blog from this climb.
