Arrived in Kathmandu

April 26, 2007 By blogadmin 11 Comments

Hi everyone,

Fiona here with a quick hello to let you know that the Girls+Cas group has all now arrived in Kathmandu.

Hooking Up
Denise, Liz, Mum and I all flew over from Australia and were very glad that our timing worked out so that we met up with Julia while lining up for our visas in the Kathmandu airport. She had just flown in from the US through India. We were met by Asian Trekking and driven to our hotel – but got caught in a small traffic jam not far from the hotel. Suddenly there was waving and tapping on the window and it took us a moment to realise that it was Beck and Cas. They had spent the morning visiting Monkey Temple.

Absorbing Kathmandu
After a shower and a brief meeting with Asian Trekking, we headed out to explore our surrounds. Even though this is now my third time here, I’m still left awe-struck at the chaotic street scenes here. We weaved our way through the bedlam, successfully avoiding buying any tiger-balm, hashish, or changing money on the black market. As we were all quite tired and it was getting late, we decided to leave our gear purchases for tomorrow. Instead, we headed out for a great pizza dinner at the Fire and Ice (not very Nepalese but we have plenty of time for that!). Unfortunately Beck wasn’t feeling the best so decided not to join us for dinner. Hopefully she’ll be feeling better in the morning.

Well, the long-flight is starting to catch up with me so its off to bed now.

All the best,
Fiona

Could you please pass this message to Rudi, your Austrian teammate:
    Hallo Rudi,

    Hi Fiona and co.

So glad you all arrived in Kathmandu safely. How nice that you met Julia while in line for your visas. And how coincidental that Beck and Cas found you while you were driving to your hotel. Enjoy the fast paced sights and sounds of Kathmandu!

    Cheers,
    MC

    To Fiona and Paul
I just wanted to say that my wife and I followed your trip last year and are not going to miss a single update this year. We want to wish you the best of luck and say to both of you please stay as safe as you can in what you are doing.
If we had become fascinated with Mt Everest when we were younger we would have tried to do this to.
    Best of luck

Hi Fiona, Fiona’s mom, Julia and Rebecca,
We are here in Florida very happy to know that you all gathered together safely, had a good dinner and went to bad earlier. (We hope that Julia did too).
We are sorry for Rebecca not feeling well. She may need a good night sleep and then having all you girls around.
Have a wonderful journey. Stay safe.

    Hi Paul,
We are reading all your updates and wish you a good luck to achieve your goal.

    Love, Tamara and Boris

Hi Fiona, Mum, Bec, Denise and Liz,
Glad to hear that you all arrived safely. I hope you managed okay with the shopping (fiona, I’m sure you had no problem with that). I hope the first climb goes okay and you all keep safe.
    All my love, Leah
Mum – remember to wear 2 matching pairs of shoes for your trek.

    Woof! Woof!
We have just had a great big walk down the beach with Baz and Gab and we are very tired.
Zac chased the ball and landed in the water several times…….sometimes Zac gave the ball back to Baz, and sometimes he didn’t!
I was too interested in my own little world exploring the sand dunes
    We are very happy
Baz and Gab and Zac say Hi!
    Love from Zoe

Hi Fizz Wizz, girls and Cas

Great to hear you are safely in Kathmandu. Enjoy your time before heading for base camp and I will be thinking of you all as I do my best this weekend to broaden my training for Peru and try (I did say try) to learn Spanish.

    Hi Paul

Thank you for the latest update and my thoughts (with many others) are with the family of the sherpa who didn’t make it this time and with all the climbers attempting the summit this year.

    Love always

    Hi Paul,
Great to know you are there again, the very best to you this time. Bill and I are leaving in 3 days to go across Aust from E to W in a convoy of 10 off road vans. We are really looking forward to it and Rob has set us up to follow your climb so we will hook up where we can. Your dogs are lovely!! Love to you and Fiona.

Paul’s Everest Climb 2007

In 2007, Paul returned to climb Mt Everest after missing out on reaching the summit by 100 metres the previous year. In 2006, Paul and Fiona both climbed together and although Fiona successfully summited, problems with Paul's oxygen system forced him to turn around. On 23 May 2007, exactly a year to the day later, he reached the summit. This is the daily blog from this climb.
